Comedienne Ellen Degeneres accomplished another first for U.S. television this week – after she challenged Michelle Obama to a press-up contest during her chat show.

Obama, wife of American President Barack Obama, was a guest on the smash-hit TV show earlier this week.

During her appearance Ellen asked about her physical fitness routine – an integral part of the First Lady's Let's Move campaign, which aims to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation.

When Ellen then asked Obama about her defined arms, she challenged the political figure to a contest live on-air.

Obama accepted, to the delight of the audience, and both women performed several repetitions.

The clip has already gone viral, with more than 100,000 views on the official Ellen You Tube channel since it was uploaded on 1 February.
