An unknown band from the United States have become and online smash after their latest video touched thousands of viewers with a moving message about marriage equality.
The band – Bye June – have catapulted into public consciousness with their track Shades of Purple. The accompanying video uses a metaphor of same-sex swans who meet and fall in love.
It is thought to be the first pop video ever to solely use shadow puppetry and, since being uploaded four weeks ago, has amassed almost 100,000 views.
The band, consisting of lead singer/songwriter Gil Kline, drummer Gunner Sledgeski and Daniel McGreal
on bass, the song was rose to prominence after fans voted it most-worthy of a video treatment in an online poll.
Originating from the Washington DC area, they bill themselves as a "socially conscious band" and, for Kline, the motivation for writing the track came from personal experience.
“I am very pleased, since this song has deep meaning and an important social message”, Gil told PinkPaper.com
“I wrote this song because my cousin is in 10 year relationship and he
can't marry his partner. They are so in love, and it angers me that
politicians try to tell other people who to love and spend their life
with”.
The video, which can be seen below, features exclusive shadowography from Sati Achath, who has been featured on American TV and reached the quarter finals of America’s Got Talent in 2008.
“I am very excited to bring this art-form to a whole new generation. I fell in love with this project for the music, message and medium”, Sati told us.
