Football club Queens Park Rangers issued a formal statement warning fans against participating in anti-gay chants during matches.
The warning came last night – just hours after news they'd signed a controversial player who was banned from the game for singing a homophobic song, last year.
Nigerian-born Taye Taiwo, who previously played for Italian club AC Milan, offended gay and lesbian supporters when, after Marseille beat Montpellier 1-0 in the French League Cup final last April, he sang a homophobic song over a microphone.
The incident re-iterated the need for football to tackle homophobia from within.
French football officials later fined him £17,000 and banned him for one game.
According to The Sun newspaper, QPR chairman Tony Fernandes yesterday issued a statement with Chelsea FC which denounced anti-gay hate.
“Discrimination has no place in football or society.
“Hatred and abuse is not what being a fan of QPR or Chelsea is about.
“The clubs will work with the police to ensure anyone using discriminatory or inflammatory language is identified and the strongest possible action is taken against them.”
