Long-running ITV soap opera Coronation Street will feature its very first lesbian wedding, this Christmas.
Characters Sian Powers and Sophie Webster – played by Sacha Parkinson and Brooke Vincent – plan a festive church ceremony and even wear matching dresses in the forthcoming storyline.
However, when Sian discovers Sophie has cheated on her, she flees the altar and leaves her other half desperately trying to catch up with her.
The storyline has been scripted in a bid to write Parkinson out of the ITV series and was confirmed to PinkPaper.com by ITV officials, last month.
It will air towards the end of December.
The actresses used micro-blogging site Twitter to report from behind-the-scenes. Parkinson wrote: ‘In the church filming the wedding! Awwww! My last block is proving to be very emotional! #9Days #CoronationStreet!’
Vincent added: ‘Going To Honestly Miss My Friend When She Goes I’m Sat In The Winny Filling Up @SachaLParkinson #themiddleoftheend #3years’
In November 2010, Coronation Street won the new Broadcast Of The Year award at the Stonewall Awards ceremony in recognition of the gay storyline.
