tim pride Conservative Cllr Tim Harris received unanimous cross-party support for his motion asking Reading Borough Council to assist with a £10,000 grant to build a local LGBT support centre, yesterday.

Harris submitted a petition for the initiative at the city's civic centre last night, following weeks of garnering support.

Cllr Tim Harris moved the motion – entitled Support Centre for LGBT Community – and it was seconded by Cllr Jamie Chowdhary.

The money needed will cover start-up costs and help the facility become self-sufficient.

Cllr Tim Harris told PinkPaper.com: “As Reading Conservatives we were in no doubt that an LGBT centre would be a real benefit to our town's residents.

"To get it endorsed by every single councillor on Reading Borough Council was a pleasant surprise, and as a result we should see the centre up and running shortly.”

The centre's website, www.supportu.org.uk, is now asking potential service users and volunteers to complete a survey on what requirements they would like, need or recommend.
