A group of gay and lesbian youngsters have started an epic bike ride from Preston to London in a bid to personally deliver a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron.
The ten cyclists, who began their journey yesterday, are all involved in
Hangout Harry Ltd – an organisation which offers safe social events and
excursions for the gay and lesbian youth of Central Lancashire.
They
will stop over in Manchester, Stoke on Trent, Wolverhampton, Coventry,
Northampton, Luton and Barnet before arriving in Westminster.
The letter will outline the need for the government to promote
cooperation between businesses and LGBT organisations in all
communities, despite government cuts.
Hangout Harry, run by Andrew Neale, works alongside the University of
Central Lancashire’s LGBT Society and other figures in the community to
offer a safe environment for gay and lesbian young people. Their aim is
to encourage the government to help communities in following their
example, especially now that funding cuts have been made.
“The concept is simple. It’s about dealing with these cuts and not
complaining about them. If every community group up and down the country
took similar steps, there’d be no need for service users and vulnerable
people to lose out," says Neale.
"The LGBT youth of Central Lancashire, for example, will now be able to
continue to meet. There’s no reason why this shouldn’t be the case up
and down the country.”
