Ricky Martin is to receive the Vito Russo Award at this year’s Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards in New York on 19 March.
The singer, who came out publicly last year, will receive the special honour due to his work throughout the USA to promote the equality of the lesbian and gay community.
Martin, who is now a father to two children, has said he is delighted with the accolade.
The GLAAD Media Awards has around 5,000 attendees, corporate partners and celebrities together to recognise representations of the LGBT community in the media and GLAAD’s work to achieve full equality.
It is the charity’s 25th anniversary this year, with ceremonies being held in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Kristin Chenoweth is another celebrity that will be receiving an award on account of her dedication to increasing the visibility and understanding of the nation’s gay people.
