Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, warned against demonising homosexuals, last night.

Responding to the death of Ugandan activist David Kato, who had previously been outed in a national newspaper, Williams told press: "You cannot go around sharing information about the identity of proposed lesbian and gay persons and urging people to ostracise them or worse 'Hang Them' as in the headlines of one of the Ugandan newspapers.

"You cannot do that without taking responsibility for the consequences. Language which demonises gays and lesbians has consequences."

As reported in the Belfast Telegraph, he made the statement at the Emmaus retreat centre in Swords, Co Dublin, which is hosting a six-day conference for Anglican leaders.

Previously, Williams has said that he has no problems with gay members of the Anglican church – as long as they are celibate.

During an interview with The Times newspaper, he said: "To put it simply, there's no problem about a gay person who's a bishop.

"It's about the fact that there are traditionally, historically, standards that clergy are expected to observe. So there's always a question about the personal life of the clergy."

Who cares what the state appointed archbishop says. He is a pawn of the state nothing more. Marx was so right.

The idiot Williams has done as much as any public figure to demonise gays. It may be a cliche, but physician, heal thyself. This statement is perhaps the greatest hypocrisy of his duplicitous primacy so far. With a brain as allegedly large as his, perhaps it's not surprising that he can keep two opposed ideas in his head at the same time without realising the contradiction. If there's nothing wrong with a bishop being gay, how can it then be necessary to say that there are "standards that clergy are expected to observe. So there's always a question about the personal life of the clergy." If doing gay things is wrong (for clergy), then being gay is wrong (for clergy - and everyone else). And not even being archbishop of canterbury and being allowed to wear a frock and a funny hat in public alters that, if, as Jesus said, just thinking adultery is as bad as adultery. If he actually believed there was nothing wrong with a gay man being a bishop, why did he order Jeffrey John, a celibate

It is a pity that the Archbishop doesn’t acknowledge that his fellow Anglicans’ bigotry concerning LGBT relationships and rights have contributed to the murder of David cato and the dire situation for all LGBT people in Uganda.” Regarding Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill, proposed by MP David Bahat, the Anglican Church of Uganda has said: “We appreciate the spirit of the Bill’s objective of protecting the family, especially in light of a growing propaganda to influence younger people to accept homosexuality as a legitimate way of expressing human sexuality. We particularly appreciate the objectives of the Bill which seek to provide for marriage in Uganda as contracted only between a man and woman; prohibit and penalise homosexual behaviour and related practices in Uganda as they constitute a threat to the traditional family; prohibit ratification of any international treaties, conventions, protocols, agreements and declarations which are contrary or inconsistent with the provisions

"traditionally, historically, standards" Though grammatically inaccurate this says it all. The Anglican Church, like all churches are based on tradition and not fact. They are enemies of reason and enemies of the enlightenment. When will humanity move on. I wish people wouldn't quote these mentally impaired, fairy worshipping, dinosaurs. It just makes me more irritated to find that so many people in today's society still hide under a rock in the dark ages clinging to ancient values, thought up by desert dwelling, women hating, narrow minded men.
