London Sports Day raises thousands for GMFA

Dozens of competitors and thousands of spectators joined together for London's Gay Sports Day, last weekend.

GMFA sports day 2010h Dozens of competitors and thousands of spectators joined together for London's Gay Sports Day, last weekend.

The annual event, organised by GMFA, the gay men’s health charity, and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern saw 12 teams of five competitors take part with more than £1,000 being raised to support health work with gay men and the local community.

Competition was fierce during the day, with Fatima and the Four Husbands crowned winners of the sporting events.

The Dibb Dobbs Experience were the top fundraisers, thanks to their amazing efforts to bring in over £1,400 from sponsorships, while Prissy Queens of the Knoll won best costume for their Priscilla Queen of the Desert-inspired outfits.

Rugby star Ben Cohen and gay icon Kylie Minogue gave their support to the event, donating rare and collectable items for an auction.  

Matthew Hodson , Head of Programmes at GMFA, commented: “Many thanks to everyone for making Sports Day such a huge success. We think it was our biggest crowd yet and the teams all made a huge effort, both with their outfits and their amazing fundraising efforts.

“The full total raised from the event is still to be confirmed as donations are still being counted. The money we get from Sports Day really does make a difference and helps us carry out our vital work for gay men.”
