Foreign Secretary William Hague has been given the full backing of Prime Minister David Cameron as he responds to allegations over his sexuality, according to a Downing Street spokesperson.
In recent days, various newspapers and websites have reported on
suggestions that Hague, 49, and his aide, Christopher Myers, 25, have
enjoyed a personal relationship.
In a
statement issued last night, Hague responded to the rumours by saying:"Any suggestion that his
appointment was due to an improper relationship between us is utterly
false, as is any suggestion that I have ever been involved in a
relationship with any man.
"This speculation
seems to stem from the fact that whilst campaigning before the election
we occasionally shared twin hotel rooms. Neither of us would have done
so if we had thought that it in any way meant or implied something
else."
The former Conservative Party
leader disclosed that he and his wife Ffion had suffered trouble conceiving.
Now, according to The Telegraph newspaper, Downing Street is also offering its support to the Foreign Secretary.
A representative said: "We have always given William our 100 per cent support. That was
the case yesterday and it is the case today.
"The Prime Minister totally understands why William made the statement he did
and he backs him 100 per cent."
