Jane Lynch wins Emmy for Glee role

US actress Jane Lynch has won her first Emmy for her role in teen drama Glee.

Lynch US actress Jane Lynch has won her first Emmy for her role in teen drama Glee.

The openly gay star, who married her long term partner Lara Embry earlier this summer, won the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy award for her role as villainous sports coach Sue Sylvester in the hit show.

Lynch, who appeared on the cover of gay women's glossy DIVA magazine earlier this year, has received unanimous critical acclaim for her acting skills since Glee's first season arrived last year.

It is the first Emmy win for the veteran actress. Lynch thanked her wife in her acceptance speech. Glee creator Ryan Murphy also took home an award for his directing abilities.

The 2010 Emmy Awards took place at the Nokia Theatre in LA on Sunday, 29 August.

The first episode of the second season of Glee airs in the US on 21 September.
