The chief ranking officer of the US Marines claimed yesterday that the majority of Marines would not want to share a room with a gay comrade.
General James Conway told a Pentagon press conference: "I can tell you that an overwhelming majority would like not to be roomed with a person who is openly homosexual," according to an AFP report.
A review to possibly repeal the ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy, which prohibits openly gay people from joining the US military, is expected to reach completion this year.
Conway continued: "Some do not object. And perhaps, you know, perhaps a voluntary basis might be the best way to start without violating anybody's sense of moral concern or a perception on the part of their mates."
The general was forced to admit however, that should the ban be lifted, the Marine Corps would obey and carry out the change without delay.
According to a recent poll conducted by CNN and Opinion Research, 78 percent of Americans believe gays should be allowed to serve in the military.
