Saltire FC logo Glasgow’s brand new gay football team, Saltire Thistle FC, are celebrating after securing a 7-1 win from their first-ever competitive match held yesterday.

The club, which only started having open kickabout sessions in March, played a well-fought 11-a-side game at Edinburgh’s Saughton Sports Centre against local opponents Maybury FC.

Ross McClung, co-founder and chairman of Saltire Thistle FC, commented: “To win our first match with such a great score of 7-1 is absolutely fantastic for the team. We’ve only been going for a short number of months so we’re very pleased with this result.”

The team have so far exceeded many expectations after having taken part in the national GFSN 5’s competition last month where they reached the final eight teams of the tournament before being knocked out by on penalties by Village Manchester FC.

McClung added: “We have great ambitions for this team, and we truly believe it can only keep on getting bigger and better.  We are aiming to enter the GFSN UK cup this season and are planning to apply for league entry next year.”

Manager and co-founder Colin Sinclair is also looking to carry on improving the team.

He said: “I’m delighted with numbers so far and as a manager my job is made easy by the attitude and determination shown by the members we have already. I’m always on the lookout for new players to add in though, and as people see the club grow in numbers as well as developing the skills of our current members, we should be a side that makes people sit up and notice us, and want to play for us.”
