Liberal Democrat politician and Minister for Equalities, Lynne Featherstone, has vowed to amend the last remaining legal inequalities within the gay community, today.
Speaking to PinkPaper.com behind the scenes at Pride London, she told us that equality remains a goal.
"Trans hate crime doesn't have the same aggregating factor as race crime, which is unfair. 89 per cent of trans people experience hate crime, so this is important. Likewise, if you change your gender identity and you're married, you have to get divorced - which is ridiculous."
Featherstone, who was previously Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Youth and Equality issues, also promised to tackle homophobic bullying, which maintains a major problem in schools, colleges and workplaces throughout the country.
"The main issue is changing hearts and minds. Homophobic bullying is truly horrendous because it effects people for their entire lives.Tidying up criminal records legislation is also key.
"But however much we celebrate here in central London, there are still other parts of the country who don't have equality and that's what we aim to deliver."
She was also keen to stress that the coalition government - something she joking referred to as the ultimate civil partnership - should not face discrimination either, instead being judged on their current acheivements and aims.
"Don't look at the past, because we all make mistakes - including the Labour party. They were happy to deport people to countries where they would be murdered and tortured.
"We've made it clear that we are committed to equality, so I say to all of the doubters and the cynics - many of whom have emailed me - that we should be judged for who we are now."
