The US Senate made history last week, by approving the repeal of the country’s law barring HIV-positive visitors. The bill passed the Senate with the Kerry-Smith provision by a vote of 80 to 16. It now moves to conference committee before being sent to the President. Critically-acclaimed, British-born writer Andrew Sullivan – who is HIV positive – has lived in America for over 25 years without the option of citizenship. He told Pink Paper: “For those of us who have long dreamed of becoming Americans, and have been prevented by 1993 law from even being able to enter or leave the US without waivers or fear or humiliation, this is a massive burden lifted.
