Following the current case of British ex-pat Michelle Palmer, Dubai police have formed an undercover unit to combat gay sex on the Emirate’s public beaches. An unnamed official at the force’s criminal investigation department said that officers in civilian clothing are patrolling local beaches after complaints from the public. According to Dubai government statistics, out of 2.97 million beach visitors last year, 641 people were caught in compromising situations.

Dubai needs tourism to replace income from depleting oil. The best way to drag repressive nations out of the middle-ages is to hit 'em where it hurts; in the pocket! Often, just the threat of financial boycott is enough to make conservative regimes think again, as homophobic Malawi has recently discovered. Show the world you mean what you say about gay equality, Cameron. Ban travel and aid to countries which refuse to respect human rights.
