Players from Leftfooters Football Club competed against members of the London Royals Hockey Team in a charity hockey vs football competition held earlier this month.

The friendly match named ‘Fockball’ saw the two gay London teams battle against each other playing one half of hockey followed by one half of football in aid of Cancer Research UK, raising a total of £200 for the charity.

Much humour was had on the day with London Royals walking away with a victorious 7-0 score in the hockey side of the match followed by Leftfooters winning with 9-1 during the football half of the game.

At the end of the day both teams shook hands and tried to work out whether to add the score together to make a 9-8 score line or just accept that everyone was a winner at their own sport.

Manager of Leftfooters FC, Oli Daly said that his team enjoyed the match and felt it was definitely a worthwhile experience.

He commented: “The game between ourselves and the London Royals demonstrated one thing and one thing only - other people’s sports are best left alone.”

Matt Hill from the London Royals added: “The score is less relevant than the fantastic £200 which we raised for such a worthy cause. Although technically I think the Royals demonstrated better all-round skills and we demand a rematch!”

The London Royals Hockey Club welcomes all new players, from the more experienced to the complete beginner with no age restrictions. They train on the first three Sundays of each month at John Orwell Sports Centre. For more information see www.londonroyals.co.uk

Leftfooters FC is a fun-based football team made up mainly of gay and lesbian players. They play every Sunday afternoon in Regents Park at 2pm, and have a laid-back approach of ‘jumpers-for-goalposts’ for all abilities. For more information see www.leftfooters.org.uk

Both teams are currently training to compete in this year’s Gay Games taking place in Cologne, Germany from 31 July – 7 August.
