Volunteers from around the world are currently being sought to become part of the globe’s largest queer sports and cultural event by taking part in this year’s Gay Games, taking place in Cologne, Germany from 31 July to 7 August.
Organisers of the major international event are offering athletes and non-athletes from the gay and lesbian community the chance to take up one of more than 100 different types of voluntary positions at the week-long sporting spectacular.
More than 3,000 volunteers are needed to run the event which is being called the ‘Gay Olympics’ offering 35 sporting disciplines and five cultural events.
Positions currently available cover a wide range of areas for all abilities ranging from referees, supervisors and medical workers to tournament escorts, drivers, language interpreters, support for visitors, and photographers.
Emy Ritt, co-president of the Federation of Gay Games, commented: “Volunteers are the ones who are ‘backstage’ organising, managing, supporting and assisting at the sports and cultural events all week long. Gay Games volunteers get to meet people from all over the world, and gain valuable experience at this week-long festival. It’s truly a great cultural experience!”
Annette Wachter, CEO of Games Cologne, added: “If you’re lucky enough to experience freedom and equality in your home town, volunteer work is a great opportunity to help others experience this freedom in Cologne.
“Your help can also have a hand in showing the world that there is more to LGBT life than parties and parades.”
Up to 12,000 artists and athletes from more than 70 countries are expected at the Gay Games.
