Players from Leftfooters FC are celebrating after winning their first Gay National League (GNL) game in three years played against Brighton Bandits FC.
The London-based club made history in the GNL table when
they secured their win last weekend - the first recorded successful match they
have won in the league since February 2007.
The match staged in support of the Justin Fashanu Homophobia
vs Football campaign saw Leftfooters score their first two goals within just
minutes of match kick-off.
The Bandits hit back soon after with their first goal but Leftfooters
quickly came back into the game by knocking their third goal into the net.
Not to be undone, Brighton defended themselves fighting back
with a goal and increasing the score to 3-2 just before half time.
The second half was played in desperate circumstances with
Brighton trying to equalise but defeat was ahead with Leftfooters securing
another goal bringing the final match score to 4-2.
Oli Daly, Leftfooters Manager and scorer of the fourth goal,
told Pink Paper: “It was a really hard fought game and a well deserved victory
against an experienced Bandits side. We are just glad to get that monkey off our
back and hopefully we won’t have to wait another three years.”
Celebrations carried on long into the night for Leftfooters as
players prepared for the appearance on BBC1’s TV quiz show Egg Heads in an
attempt to win money for the team’s travel to the Cologne Gay Games this July.
Leftfooters FC is fun based football team made up mainly of gay
and lesbian players. They play every Sunday afternoon in Regents Park at 2pm,
and have a laid back approach of 'jumpers-for-goalposts’ for all abilities.
They compete in the Gay National League and football tournaments around the
