A new website launched today by openly-gay peer Lord Waheed Ali aims to
promote the Equality Bill by galvanizing the consensus of the queer
community.
In doing so, visitors of equalitybill.com will be more effectively able
to lobby their MPs about the forthcoming Equality Bill by communicating
directly with them. In turn, Lord Ali will present these opinions to
the House of Lords later in the year when the Bill is brought up.
Lord Ali, who is also the youngest member of the House of Lords, is
optimistic about the effect that using voices of the gay community will
have on the House, despite many previous legislations relating to gay
issues having been considerably weakened or even stopped.
He recognises that it is important for the gay community to show that
they are involved and committed to politics, saying that "the details
of our lives should dictate the details of the law- not the other way
around."
This direct show of commitment to change could make all the difference
in how the Bill is received in the House, as Lord Ali points out "if we
show them that we are paying as much attention to the law as they are
then… the Equality Bill will emerge from Parliament as a truly landmark
piece of legislation."
