East London’s only gay men’s football team, Phoenix FC, took on a team of local police representatives to mark LGBT History month on 15 February.
The match, which kicked off at noon at John Orwell Sports Centre in Wapping, was fierce, but the Metropolitan Police Service took the game with a final score of 6-0.
The event was just one of a number of activities organised for the borough through the Tower Hamlets’ LGBT History Month programme.
The Met Police supported the friendly football game match between Phoenix FC and Tower Hamlets Police FC which was aimed at increasing community engagement, not only within Tower Hamlets LGBT Community, but also with local residents on the borough.
PCSO Lee Hawkins, who organised the match, told Pink Paper: “LGBT History month is not only a chance for us all to celebrate the lives and achievements that LGBT communities make across all of London, but to reflect specifically on Tower Hamlets LGBT past and the diverse borough it has become today.
“It is not only about sharing messages of equality and acceptance, but a chance for us all to reflect on the injustices others have suffered through homophobic hate crime. The police will continue working together with the LGBT Community, local residents, businesses and all our partners to tackle all hate crime and to ensure that Tower Hamlets become a “No Place For Hate”.
