A ten-year-old boy from Weston Super Mare has been put on a school “hate register” after he allegedly made a homophobic insult in the playground.

Peter Drury, a pupil of Ashcombe Primary School, is believed to have called one of his friends a “gay boy,” according to his mother.

The boy’s mum says she was called into her son’s school to be told by head teacher that another mother had heard him using homophobic language.

She claims she was told the incident would be registered and his file monitored while he was at the school.

“He doesn’t even understand about the birds and the bees, so how can he be homophobic?”
Schools are reportedly being given advice that offensive comments made by children as young as five should be recorded and kept on record until the pupil leaves secondary school.

"500Hz in hard realtime", It's absolutell like my? job, slow and useless :).Seriously, if the arm moves too slowly you need to send the step signals quicker. It isn't a problem with stepper vs. Servo. It's a controller problem, IMHO. This is my own , keep your hands away !!!

I think that its great that schools are finally recognising homophobic bullying as a problem, hopefully this will be combined with education and should be dealt with in the same way as racism in schools is. As for the ten year old boy, he should be made to understand the consquences of his remarks, educated and taught that bullying is unacceptable. I also agree with the person who made the comments about the media. Until we tackle how LGBT people are portrayed in the media, and homophobic remarks made by people in public life are challenged and dealt with again in the same way as racist comments are, this problem in schools will not go away.

At ten yrs old i think his parents need to inform him and he might now get some advice and lessons in what hate crimes are all about, that includes his parents and the other students in the school too.

Hm, it's good that they're recognising it as a problem. But it's bad that they're punishing him instead of educating the child as to why. Again, this is a knee-jerk reaction and doesn't tackle the cause of his remark, which is mostly ignorance. As for whether he understands it or not, only the child will know that. We can't make general assumptions upon rates of sexual development. It's a bit much to make a 10 year old work in an LGBT charity - I think all children should simply be educated to understand that people come from all walks of life and bullying people is simply wrong. Learning about diversity stops discrimination...

I think you mean Iris Robinson. However I do think you have a point but I still think this young lad needs to be educated. I am not sure what the register is for to be honest better that he and his family have to go and work in a LGBT charity for awhile. I do think homophobic bullying at school isnt really look on with the same seriousness as racism. Racism and homophobia two sides of the same ignorant coin.

I think this is an excellent place to fight homophobia and hate! If a child does not understand what something is or means, then they should not say it. Ignorance is no excuse for hate. I would hope that this one notation would not effect him or his grades. However, with it the school can track if this is a frequent occurence and can address it if it is a problem.

How can the mother be so naive, of course this boy understands what he said. Kids are not stupid and making a comment about him not understanding the birds and the bees, just goes to prove that she neglected to teach him about the facts of life and tolerance to other people and cultures. Ignorance is no excuse

Come on people shouldn't we tackle the bigger influencers out there that are being allowed to get away with it. i.e if the likes of Chris Moyles on Radio 1 can use terms such as 'it's so gay' and the disgraced Northern Ireland First Minister's wife (Mary Robinson?) way state homosexuality is wrong - these people in public life need to be dealt with severly. The boy was wrong, he needs to be educated not stuck on a register for his first offence. Jeez, the school needs soem advice from Stonewall and people in public office and public life need to lead by example.

I agree with the last post. While I in no way want to stigmatise children for ignorance. Anti-gay language and hatred is a problem that children who are gay or percieved as gay have to deal with every day of their lives. If the boy had made a racist comment it would be noted on his file so the school was entirely correct to make an issue of it. Clearly a right wing newspaper journalist took umbrage at preventing this little lad venting his homophobic spleen. LGBT people need to understand that homophobia is every bit as bad as racism. Sometime even I an activist tend to underestimate the damage it does. I wish the boy well and hope he learns from this.

Ignorance is no defence, if he doesn’t know about the “birds and the bees” clearly a homophobic incident recorded on his school file is the least of his worries! Hopefully it’ll teach him that this kind of behaviour is not acceptable, something his mother clearly failed to teach him. I only wish all schools would take homophobia as seriously.

He heard this language somewhere, most likely an adult. Most likely at home. We cant all have perfect parents so surely its up to the schools to educate hate out of children as early as possible then maybe they can educate their parents to the right way of thinking. Most kids think smoking and drink driving is unacceptable and thats down to education and keeping the subjects in the public eye through advertising, homophobia and hate crimes should be kept in the limelight too. Its not the kids fault, its our fault for not doing enough. Its a bit harsh to put him on 'a hate register' that sounds worse than anything, they should make him do something that makes him feel good to do something kind and positive for others.
