An art teacher who claimed he suffered sexual orientation discrimination at his former workplace despite being straight has lost his harassment case.

James Campbell, who is married, retired from his job at Denny High School in Scotland in 2007 after months of homophobic abuse from pupils.

The 62-year-old from Grangemouth claims he left his post after the school failed to acknowledge his complaints about the abuse.

"Before this I enjoyed doing things for kids. I was involved with youth clubs, the Boys Brigade and football teams and I loved my job,” Campbell told the Glasgow tribunal.

"But now when I see kids I expect the worst of them and think that they'll treat me the same way I was treated at Denny High School. I have bad dreams about kids abusing me and me chasing after them."

However, employment judge Robert Gall rejected Campbell’s argument, including his claim that Falkirk Council were responsible for the pupils’ actions as they were ‘employees’ of the school.

"Unruly pupils and disciplinary issues are such that it is impossible to eradicate them altogether," he claimed.
