A spokesman for Lothian and Borders police has confirmed two officers have been investigated and reprimanded for sending homophobic e-mails to colleagues.

The officers, based at Leith police station in Edinburgh, used a colleague’s computer to send the e-mails to officers in the Gay Police Association and members of a force choir, insinuating they were also gay.

The culprits were tracked down and subject to misconduct hearings and disciplinary proceedures after the person who received the slurs complained to bosses.

Christina Stokes from Stonewall Scotland said: “Homophobic behaviour will never be tolerated.

“A good employer will take incidents like this seriously. It is particulary important to do this when Lothian and Borders Police have been working to build bridges with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.”

A police source said: “This was homophobic abuse.”

The Gay Police Association works for equal opportunities and offers advice and support to gay officers.

Uniformed officers from the Association marched through the streets of Edinburgh in June this year for Pride Scotia.
