Church ordains world's first lesbian bishop

The Church of Sweden consecrated its first openly-lesbian bishop in Eva Brunne on Sunday.

Eva Brunne, 55, became bishop of Stockholm, Sweden's capital, in a ceremony in nearby Uppsala, reported Agence France-Presse.

Brunne, who is now the first lesbian bishop in the world, is in a civil partnership with a woman, and they have a 3-year-old child.

The Church of Sweden, The Church of Sweden professes the Lutheran branch of Christianity, and is a member of the Porvoo Communion. With almost 6.9 million members, it is the largest Lutheran church in the world.

They will perform same-sex marriages from 1 November.

The state had previously recognised, and the church blessed, marriage-like partnerships. About three quarters of Swedes are members of the denomination.
