A Polish football club have sacked their goalkeeper this week after he published homophobic statements in his autobiography.
Arek Onyszko, was fired by his club FC Midtjylland after it emerged he had used offensive language against gay people n his book ‘F****** Polak’.
Onyszko wrote: ““I hate gays, I really do. I think it’s f****** disgusting to hear them talk to each other as if they are girls. I can’t be in the same room as someone who’s gay. Look at them kissing each other – it’s sickening,”
The club employed the goalkeeper just a week after he was fired from his last post with Odense football club in June for both assaulting his ex-wife, and announcing his hatred of homosexuals.
In a statement, Jens Ørgaard, head of sport at club FC Midtjylland, said: “We felt we did the right thing in the summer when we offered Arek Onyszko a new chance after his conviction. He was punished and like everyone else needed help to get back on his feet again.
“But lately he has abused our trust... despite warnings, he continued to work on the book project and FCM had no knowledge of its existence until now.”
The European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation (EGLSF) have welcomed the move by FC Midtjylland to make a stand against homophobic hatred.
Co-President of the EGLSF Pepe Garcia-Vazquez says: “The decision to sack Mr Onyszko sends out a powerful message by one of Denmark’s leading football clubs that homophobia in the game is totally unacceptable.
“Recent research in the UK published by the human rights organisation Stonewall clearly shows that the majority of fans find anti-gay abuse in the game unacceptable. It’s good to see a professional club in Europe get behind the needs of its supporters and in such a public way.”
