Thousands of gay men, lesbians and bisexuals took to the streets of Mumbai on Sunday to celebrate queer pride, just weeks after a New Delhi high court began a u-turn on India's stance on sexuality.

The annual Azadi March Gay Parade boasted a more liberal mood this year, with political activism receding from the front line, report Advocate.com.

"The ball has started rolling and now it's only going to get better," Kumar Iyer, a gay makeup artist, told Agent France-Presse.

On 2 July, India's Delhi High Court iberated its stance on human rights by decriminalising homosexuality. The law, which was imposed by British colonial rule over 100 years ago, says an individual who "voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal" shall be imprisoned for life or for a term exceeding 10 years and be liable to pay a fine.

It is currently being challenged by opponents.
